A curta mas imponente obra do escritor alemão Sebald deixou marcas no meio literário desde a publicação de seus três primeiros livros em prosa no mundo de língua inglesa. A sentença dos críticos a respeito dessa obra foi cristalina como a prosa do autor: eis um grande escritor produzindo uma grande obra. Susan Sontag (2016), Cynthia Ozick (2001), entre outros, exaltaram a prosa cristalina, grandiosa, confidente e sublime do autor. Nota-se que há algo na escrita de Sebald que chama a atenção. Se para Sontag (2016) isso se liga à tradição de sua terra natal, de escritores como Jean Paul, Grillparzer, Walser, Bernhard, para Ozick, ele entra em uma linhagem mais antiga, que de Homero, na Odisséia a Dante, passando por Virgílio e até pelo Salmista, cantam e tornam belos temas tristes como a ausência, a perda, a saudade, a errância, o exílio, embelezando a dor para romantizar as sombras do irreparável (OZICK, 2001). Por isso a autora usa o termo “posthumous sublime” para dizer que a escrita de Sebald é uma forma de resistir ao pesado fim que Adorno pôs à poesia após Auschwitz (2001). Mas por que “sublime”? Qual é a característica nos livros de Sebald que podemos relacionar a esse fenômeno, experiência, ou estilo? Será que o sublime em Sebald apenas resgata a tradição romântica e idealista alemã, de Kant e Schiller, ou traz algo de novo à reflexão sobre a estética do sublime, a partir de Adorno e Lyotard? O presente trabalho pretende apresentar elementos e traços do sublime na obra de Sebald, especificamente em The Rings of Saturn, focando principalmente na visão trágica que Schiller traz para a discussão do sublime, a partir de seus dois estudos sobre o tema, e da sua visão do homem em sua dupla natureza, de ser natural e ser moral, sempre em disputa. Essa visão será relacionada ao estudo de Freud, “O mal-estar na cultura”, que para Seligmann-Silva (2010) é um dos melhores textos sobre o sublime, no qual se destaca, principalmente, a relação entre o sublime e a morte. Os dois teóricos, a partir de suas respectivas perspectiva e com suas particularidades, apresentam a visão trágica do humano como um ser dividido entre natureza e razão ou cultura, em um embate onde a vitória do segundo elemento traz a ilusão da felicidade e do progresso que sempre acaba por levá-lo aos mesmos erros, a catástrofe e a destruição. Na escritura de Sebald este ser é posto em cena, a partir de uma ficção que não só questiona as suas próprias bases, por causa das intromissões de elementos biográficos na sua tessitura ficcional, como também o nosso lugar no mundo, a partir de uma visão cósmica, ou “Coign of Vantage” (Blackler, 2007), que enxerga a vida e a história a partir de suas redes de conexões que se multiplicam e complexificam, em um emaranhado de relações éticas e estéticas que talvez só a arte e a literatura conseguem apresentar.
