A perda é uma experiência básica na nossa constituição enquanto sujeitos, já que é a partir dela que podemos aceitar a nossa mortalidade, a nossa impotência, enfim, os nossos limites humanos. Se enquanto bebês, estamos numa posição onipotente, é a perda que nos força a lidar com esses limites. Narrar também é uma experiência básica. É o ato de narrar que nos permite organizar nossas experiências em uma ordem temporal. Em outros termos, quando narramos, organizamos nossa história. Este trabalho visa investigar o cruzamento dessas duas experiências; especificamente, buscaremos compreender como distintas formas de reação à perda tomam forma em narrativas literárias. O romance Cidade de Deus, de Paulo Lins, possui, nos termos de Roberto Schwarz, “uma inesperada insistência da poesia”. Um dos momentos recorrentes da presença desse lirismo na narrativa é o momento da morte dos protagonistas, com uma clara distinção interna. O narrador demonstra simpatia por Inferninho e Cabeça na primeira parte, por Pardal na segunda, mas não mostra por Miúdo na terceira. Acreditamos que esta irrupção do lirismo é resultado do luto do narrador em relação à morte desses personagens, o que contrasta com a descrição seca e curta da última morte do romance, a de Miúdo. Em relação ao romance S. Bernardo, de Graciliano Ramos, acreditamos que a presença hegemônica do fluxo de pensamento nos capítulos XIX e XXXVI mostra a incapacidade do narrador melancólico de lidar com a perda e, por conseguinte, construir uma narrativa que ligue o passado, o presente e o futuro. Para a conceituação do luto e da melancolia, nos basearemos em alguns textos de Freud, Lambotte e Darian Leader.
