“A pureza é um mito” – assim escreveu Hélio Oiticica na parte superior da parede de um dos Penetráveis pertencentes à instalação ambiental “Tropicália” (1967), cuja materialidade composta por elementos baratos e populares se apresenta como evocação artística a uma suposta espacialidade tropical, isto é, a uma condição de impermanência advinda do trânsito de diversos substratos sociais, históricos e culturais. Na obra de Oiticica, o visitante sai da posição de observador para tornar-se participante ao ser convidado a adentrar-se na instalação para percorrer descalço um caminho feito de areia e pedras de brita. Segundo o artista, “o ambiente criado era obviamente tropical, como que num fundo de uma chácara, e, o mais importante, havia a sensação de que se estaria pisando a terra” (Oiticica, “Tropicália e Parangolés” - 1967). Através da ênfase de Oiticica na proposição de “pisar a terra”, pode ser entrevisto o desejo de uma grande parcela de artistas dos anos 60/70 interessada na abordagem do “solo brasileiro”, isto é, dos eixos ético e artístico pertencentes à cultura em questão, porém indo mais além da superfície deste terreno ao buscar discursos espaciais silenciados durante o processo de construção das narrativas oficiais e, portanto, hegemônicas. Portanto, “pisar a terra” seria um movimento de avanço para dentro deste solo, no intuito de chegar à condição subterrânea de uma cultura, opondo-se por conseguinte ao discurso oficial empreendido pelo Estado vigente, marcado pela coesão e coerção das manifestações públicas sobre diversidade e liberdade política, cultural e social. Partindo destes pressupostos, a obra de Oiticica apresenta-se como evocação a tantos outros agentes culturais do período, interessados em discutir artisticamente a espacialidade tropical brasileira como terreno composto por uma genealogia sem origem, cujos movimentos de construção, desmontes e deslocamentos rechaçam qualquer discurso essencialista de uma “identidade espacial/cultural brasileira”, por sua vez constantemente móvel, residual e impura. Além da instalação ambiental de Hélio Oiticica, pode-se citar como exemplos a cenografia de Lina Bo Bardi para a peça teatral “Na Selva das Cidades”, encenada pelo Teatro Oficina (1969), para o qual foi criado um espaço cênico composto por restos de uma construção e que era destruído diariamente durante o espetáculo; a obra literária “Panamérica” (1967) de José Agrippino de Paula, repleta de imagens de fragmentação e dissolução espacial do solo em que pisam os personagens; os escritos de Rogério Duarte, reunidos na coletânea “Tropicaos”.
